That's absolutely not how this piece is being performed. the recording being played simultaneously is a track of the main melody being played by the string ensenble, with its high frequencies cut off. According to G.Bryars that is to create an illusion of under-water ambient sound. The tape is being played throughout the entire _live_ performance, it's deffinitely not a pre-recorded piece of many channels.
