@shermhead0 Umm, speaking as a femaie also living in Japan, I think that could be said for a lot of foreign males here, not only black guys. But to make such a blanket statement is totally ignorant.  Especially the STD remark.

He's said that he can, but he's not used to it, so he's not as good; or at least he doesn't have confidence in his ability to sing in English.
I think if he practiced, he could do it, and do it well enough to get back across the pond.
