DVD Review - Entrails of a Virgin

Silly characters check. Insane plot, check. Nudity, check. Violence, check. Dark woods, check. Mud monster with giant penis, check. Entrails of a Virgin is a sexy, gory Japanese Pink film by cult softcore director Kazuo Komizu aka Gaira and was released in 1986.

From the 60s through to the 90s Japan produced many softcore films called "Pink" films and often mixed the genre with horror or vigilante/revenge films. This release by Synapse films is one of the more accessible titles from this era and does what it says on the tin.

The plot is simple: A group of erotic photographers along with their crew get stranded in a dark wood where they are stalked and slashed by a mud monster that plays sexual games with the women. Fore the first 40 minutes there is hardly any gore but plenty of bad acting and flesh to keep you entertained until the final third act of bloodshed and mayhem. One scene features a woman pleasuring herself with a severed arm before getting her innards ripped out of her so... not for kids!

This DVD release from Synapse is well worth picking up. The transfer is in anamorphic widescreen and is great considering this was a low budget effort and looks clean but the dark scenes and very washed out and dim so can be hard to see the image. The sound is in DD mono but doesn't really need to be anything else and is fine.

The special features include a new uncut Japanese language version, new subs, a trailer, interview with Gaira and a booklet explaining the Japanese censorship and "fogging" technique used in these kind of films. The interview with the director is hilarious and worth getting just for this!

This is a great edition and well worth the money. Pick this up if you like Pink films in general and, erm, The Evil Dead... perhaps?

I just re-watched this movie and I have to say it isn't entertaining at all the second time. When I got it two years ago I had been anxious to see it for years so it was a blast to finally see it. When I knew what to expect, I realized how bad it was, hehe. I still give it 6/10 though, because there are some really nice shots in the film. Good review :)
