All crown margins should be on sound tooth structure. It seems the disto-lingual margin at 3.39 is partly on the amalgam restoration.

Grinding down amalgum fillings in the mouth without some form of dental dam seems well, primative.

It's a perioprobe. Personally, i prefer an amalgam-carver or flat plastic instrument

is there not a instrument that is used to place the retracting cord? it looks to me as if he is using a perioprobe.
