No rules in FOOTBALL, check it out, Laws of Association Football. But the ref is a pillock! If I remember the sending off was rescinded on appeal but that's no compensation to the player and team on the day.

@B1985A Fans remain in the stands. Once a "fan" runs onto the field they become an intruder and potential dangerous individual and every player should have the right to intervene and aid in apprehending them. That was NOT a fan, that was some idiot that got exactly what he deserved and that player did the right thing.

@CombatSportFan Its good you are not a coach considering you dont know the rules of the game. Violent conduct towards another player or fan is a sending off offence. Its in the rule book

If I was the coach, I would have pulled every one of the players off the field over such an awful decision. How can you red card a player for stopping an intruder (who, possibly could have been dangerous) by simply dragging him to the ground? Horrid, horrid call!

Unlike the ref in the Denmark Sweden game who called off the match when a pitch invader ran at him. He was technically right as violent behaviour to anyone on the pitch by a player is a red card. However if the person running on has a knife and tries to stab someone would he send someone off then for this. Not why the law is in place and had the "Idiot" not run on the pitch for five seconds of fame none of this would have happened.
