These are some photos from a school album and a flag that were with the Yamashiro Family photo album. There are some other photos I picked up as well.

  • I agree! Uchinanchu have a rich and wonderful culture and history that is distinct from Japanese and other Asian nations. Hogen is important but also the arts- like dance, karate, music, food etc. Uchinanchu have had to survive assault and occupation for centuries and it continues today with Japanese treating Okinawa like a resort, and USA treating Ryukyus like their own military base. Beautiful music BTW!

  • I enjoy looking at these old photographs and the struggles of the Okinawan people. Please show more so that the Ryukyuans can learn and know their identity not as Japanese but proud Ryukyuans who had their own kingdom and language. So Okinawans start holding on to your identity don't let is slip away start relearning your language. It's all apart of our people and not the Yamatunchu.

  • Nifedebiruu sa!

Thank you for sharing this beautiful glimpse into history. I miss Okinawa deeply.

  • I lived in Okinawa for 13 years, married and have two children Ryuji and Chrystal Mitsuko born and raised there. I go back every year to see my friends and enjoy the lifestyle of my Okinawan Karate and Iaido teachers.

The Okinawans are a loving, giving and peaceful people and God has granted them long life, prosperity, happiness and freedom.

I am very proud to know and love them as a people and culture.

  • Okinawa will revert back to its nature when the young aren't twisted by the bases (and hip hop culture) which occupy 20% of their main island... I think the Iraqi's are concerned it will become Okinawa #2 so they want the 60 installations there removed (regardless of outcome)..

  • Long live Ryukyu......

  • There is a very good book called Mukashi Okinawa. It has a lot of fascinating photos. I bought a copy of the book in Okinawa but lost it sometime after I left.

  • Thank you for your reply I just returned from Okinawa doing a performance called identity on June 16th in Uruma City with the Ukwanshin Kanudan. Thank you for the beautiful music.
