This is about the First World War in which Wilfred Owen saw many young men killed and he was eventually killed too.

The story of Abraham and Isaac is in the Bible, Genesis 22:1-18.
It's quoted in full at the link below. The following quotation comes from the same source:
"The rulers of Europe believed that sacrificing their nations' (Ram of) Pride was too high a price, yet the irony is that the real cost of this Pride was millions of dead - the seed of Europe."

"Abraham and Isaac" was painted by William Blake in 1793
You can hear Kenneth Branagh read it here:

And this is an excellent reading by a young man:

I have a 'thing' for your voice ;-) so enjoyed the reading very much.
Thank you for the links to the other readings. Kenneth Branagh's bored me, but *sigh*... The young man's reading was breathtaking.

It's taken a day for the implications of this poem to sink in. Brutal.

Thank you for including the link to the excellent reading by a young man. And for introducing me to all the beautiful poetry that you have so eloquently spoken for us!

I also have a version of this, which you can hear on my youtube page. Love this poem, it's terrifying and outrageously sad.
