From 2003, I got ready to leave for work and went to grab my laptop bag when I looked out and saw this thing... I woke everyone up in the house and then did what any rational person would do, I ran for the camera. Milton, Mary K, and Matthew help me with the play-by-play. As you hear, we had no warning of this. NOTE: Video taken from Parkview Point Condominium (AKA PP Building)

  • Was that the morning that there were two tornados that touched down in the water around Surfside and Bal Harbour?

  • @cheerkat16 I believe that was the day! This was minutes before those occurred... :)

  • Can they form in Tampa?

  • @NubieGTAS I thought they were fairly common (relatively speaking) in Tampa Bay... :)

  • Can water spouts form into tornadoes? In other words. Can water spouts form go on land?

  • Yup! They don't usually, but they can (... and did in this case)... The opposite is also true (The 1997 Downtown Miami tornado is an example as it originated on land and crossed Biscayne Bay)... :)

True, they generally are not considered tornadoes unless they hit land but technically they are tornadic. Particularly those spawned by supercells.

  • No, a waterspout is not a tornado.

  • Waterspouts are often very beautiful. Notice how they tend to "hover" there all 'peacefully,' unlike tornadoes that rampage over the land. XD

  • We saw one of these in Sea Isle, NJ... then it moved down our street, ripped off our cars bumper and lifted up our patio table and it NARROWLY missed our car... really weird
