Protest online against the Loudness War - take part in Dynamic Range Day 2011

This video is a comparison of the CD and Guitar Hero game versions of a song from Metallica's "Death Magnetic" album. Is the CD raw rock, or just distorted mush ? You decide !

I never noticed this stuff until that article on Cracked. What happened? The CD version sounds like a fuzzy mess. Like white noise has been added to the whole thing. No wonder your ear gets tired.

Don't listen to anything recorded after And Justice For All. Problem solved.

I guess I had been listening to the GH version the entire time...

Agreed. St. Anger had potential. I see it as a book of riffs, and some history.

Kind of sad when I can notice a huge difference within a YouTube video.

To my ears its the high hats that get affected the most.

Treble in music needs to peak. If you use compression to squash the peaks down into the mix, then all the high hats will be squashed down into the mid-range, robbing the music of any natural sounding treble.

Music needs to breath in order to sound normal.

Aha. I've no technical understanding of music myself. That makes sense. I assume you're talking mix-wise- I have serious problems with Load, Reload and above all St Anger. I still think that could've been a great album, if only they'd made some different decisions regarding producer and songwriting.

Bass is absent on that record because it was purposefully mixed low as some sort of misplaced respect for Cliff Burton. A remaster would not help. It needs remixing with the bass elements putting to their correct levels. That's the other album Metallics completely crapped on their fans with.

This example would have compensated for volume differences since it is impossible to hear differences accurately when the volume is not matched. I have both versions of this and the GH version is much quieter and obviously lacks the clipping artefacts.

You know you've hit rock-bottom as a band (and producer, because fuck Rubin) when you sound better on a video game than on your actual record.
