this orchestra members lack guts.
how boring it is! especially tha latter half.
it is very clear the player themselves don't enjoy it.
no wonder Ashkenazy left the orchestra no more than 3 years after he joined them.

I see this movement as an expression of fury and intense nervous energy. There was a recording on YouTube of Mravinsky and the Leningrad Philharmonic doing this movement which was amazing and got it right - shame this has now been taken off. I think this orchestra plays it too decorously and elegantly, as if they are trying to find lyricism in a movement which, IMHO, is not about that at all. That said, Ashkenazy knew Shostakovich and knows his music inside out, so who am I to talk?

Myth.
Comes from "Testimony" - controversial source.

To insert a scherzo-like quick movement is quite common, especially in russian music! Listen to Borodin´s 2th Symphohy or thye Prokofiev´s 5th!
