U.S. Repairing Relations with Indonesia

Can the old times bring change?

*Indonesias President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono invited Barack Obama to visit in November amid speculation the U.S. leader may choose his childhood home to address divisions with the Muslim world. Yudhoyono, Indonesias first directly elected president, made the formal invitation at a meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, presidential spokesman Dino Pati Djalal told reporters in Jakarta. Obama is reaching out to the Islamic world to repair ties damaged by the Bush administrations invasion and occupation of Iraq. Indonesian Foreign Minister Hassan Wirajuda told Clinton that his country could be a good partner in that effort. Clinton's talks with Yudhoyono was for about 30 minutes as part of her first overseas trip as the top U.S. diplomat. Indonesia has the worlds largest Muslim population. At a dinner with civil society activists, Clinton said that as I travel around the world over the next years, I will be saying to people: if you want to know whether Islam, democracy, modernity and womens rights can co-exist, go to Indonesia. Obama spent four years in Indonesia after his American mother, Ann Dunham, married Indonesian Lolo Soetoro following the end of her marriage to Obamas Kenyan father. He told President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono during a phone call after his election that hed like to visit Indonesia again. It would help forge greater cooperation between the two nations and give him a chance to try local food again including meatball soup, nasi goreng and rambutan, a local newspaper reported him as saying.
