The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is a particle accelerator of the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) that lies under the Franco-Swiss border near Geneva, Switzerland. The LHC is in the final stages of construction and commissioning, with some sections already being cooled down to their final operating temperature of approximately 2K. The first beams are due for injection mid June 2008 with the first collisions planned to take place 2 months later. The LHC will become the world's largest and highest-energy particle accelerator. The LHC is being funded and built in collaboration with over two thousand physicists from thirty-four countries as well as hundreds of universities and laboratories.

  • Um , just to put this in perspective, a proper black hole happens when a star collapses. Theres not enough matter being collided to cause an honest to goodness cosmic cataclysm. Now shut your foul whining , and lets watch some history being made...literaly.

  • THis is the coolest thing ever built

  • so one of the primary mission of CERN is to find the HIGGS fields and the particle that has mass. but where did the first 2 original protons come from that collided to create the universe?

  • too bad Einstein wasnt alive lol

  • i just hope no-one tries to fuck with the LHC while tests are being run because that could seriously mess things up.

  • This is very exciting time in world history.

The data will take a few years to analyse.

Either outcome of whether the Higgs boson is discovered or not will be mind boggling.

If it is not which is Hawkings view then we will have to rethink our view of physics which too is very exciting , who knows what awaits us.

  • soryy for my bad english. I meant "prevent from" of course. cheers

  • I just hope some smarter creatures than people are watching them right now and they will prevent them to make unwise choices.

  • Fact is scientists don't really know whats gonna happen in the experiment which is a little worrying.

but I wouldn't be worried at this stage as only low amount of energy (hydrogen nuclide) is being used.

  • Oh and another things, the odds it will happen are like 1 in 150 million or something, you wrestle with worst odds than that everyday things.

  • Aliens will save us anyway so who cares.
