Blue Angels High Speed Low Pass

F-18 piloted by one of the Blue Angels makes a high speed low pass over San Francisco Bay leaving a trail of water in his wake.

Sounds like part of his a/c broke the sound barrier. The airflow around certain sections, like the wing tips, the canopy, can reach higher speeds than the rest of the airflow, since this is where the highest dynamic pressure occurs (and the lowest static). When only sections reach Mach 1, this is called Mcrit or Mach critical. I would guess his true air speed was right at or above Mcrit and thus a "mini" boom was created. If the relative wind had exceeded Mach 1, it would have been a huge boom.
