Set in French revolutionary times, Gerard has just been given the order to denounce his friend Andrea Chenier, poet and revolutionary. He knows Chenier is already a marked man, and does not want to denounce him, but he loves Maddalena (who is in love with Chenier), so he does. The aria starts here, but as Carlo Gerard thinks about what he has come to, he remembers the ardor he had originally felt about the revolution. He sings of his desire to restore conscience to the heart, to gather the tears of the suffering, to change all people into gods, -- with a single kiss and embrace, to love all people!
