Leonardo Da Vinci
The great master Leonardo was born the 15th April 1492, a Vinci a little village between Florence and Pisa. Leonardo shows his extraordinary capabilities when he was very young. He moved to Florence at the age of about 16, and starts his apprenticeship in the workshop of Andrea del Verrochio, an established painter, sculptor and goldsmith. He stayed in Florence fir about twelve years; this was a period of intense training and experimentation. The excellent qualities of Leonardo as an artist were evident soon, together with his spirit of enquiry and scientific understanding. Leonardo was a pioneer in exploring painting technique and composition, and he was among the first to introduce the atmospheric perspective in painting. A number of great artists from the High Renaissance were inspired and learned from the artwork of Leonardo, including Raphael, Andrea del Sarto, and Fra Bartolommeo. Leonardo contributed significantly to transforming the school of Milan, and his artwork gave direction for the artistic development of Correggio. Furthrmore, Leonardo showed the capability of excelling in numerous subjects including painting, sculpturing, architecture, engineering and inventing, anatomy, physiology geology and music. The great master of the Renascence, Leonardo Da Vinci, is considered one of the greatest genius ever lived.




Mona Lisa
The portrait is painted oil on panel, the size is 77 x 53cm, and is exhibited in the museum of Louvre in Paris. The woman painted is Lisa Gheradini, wife of Francesco Del Giocondo. In Italy the painting is known as La Gioconda, while outside Italy is better known as Mona Lisa (from the title "Monna Lisa", give by Giorgio Vasari). Leonardo kept the portrait of Mona Lisa with him wherever he went, adding from time to time finishing touches to perfect the painting. He is able to express in the painting, by using the image of the woman and the landscape, his concept of continuity and harmony between the human being, nature and the universe. The sfumato (smoky effect), a painting technique developed by Leonardo, creates a progressive changing in the gradation of tones and colours. The shading around the eyes and mouth render the portrait enigmatic, producing a sense of plasticity and harmony between the sitter and the landscape.
