I publicly endorse the VAM. It has and still continues to be an invaluable tool in saving ones voice and enhancing the performance of a singer.
While yes, you could "cup your ear" i personally think that looks far more silly on stage then having an aesthetically pleasing device attached to your microphone. Cupping your ear looks very unprofessional. This VAM is a tool of the trade for professionals. I use it live and am asked frequently about it, and the surprise is always in favor.

Also concerned that it may alter the sound via acoustic relections.

It doesn't effect the sound, It actually improves the gain. It was sent out to major microphone companies for testing and evaluating.

I guess one could spend a $0.50 to 0.75 on something that replaces your own cupped hand. Certainly no more than that though for a piece of plastic.
Looks a quite weird for live use however.

True, I made my first prototype from a paper towel roll

I agree it is different; the audience respect the musicians that are playing, bands that use the piece live mention that people ask about it in between sets and are very intrigued and think its very cool. If you cannot afford ear ins, or your stage monitors are weak, rather than sing off pitch or strain to hear yourself at least there is the VAM. if you don't use it live, use it in private; listen closely to your voice and pick up new techniques..Thank you for taking a moment to comment
