Dedicated to the memory of Dennis Yost (July 20, 1943 - Dec. 7, 2008), lead singer of The Classics IV.
Mashup video featuring a medley of "Stormy" performed by Dennis Yost & The Classics IV (1968) and "Save Room" by John Legend (2006). Video clips are from the Classics IV's 1968 appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show on CBS and Grammy-winning John Legend's 2007 concert performance in Philadelphia, which resulted in his phenomenally successful "Live From Philadelphia" CD.
The two songs were released nearly four decades apart yet are remarkably similar for a reason -- "Stormy" was written by Classics IV guitarist James Cobb and producer Buddy Buie, who together also scored a #1 hit with "Spooky." Although he had not heard "Stormy" previously, John Legend heavily sampled the song for "Save Room" after "will.i.am" brought the sample to his attention. John liked the sound of the Hammond organ and wrote lyrics to accompany it. "Save Room" became the first single from his second album, Once Again.
The Supremes recorded a version of "Stormy" in early 1969; although it remained unreleased until the 1980s, many find their version to rival, even outshine the Classic IV's original. Santana scored a hit with "Stormy" in December 1978, from their "Inner Secrets" album.
After hearing "Save Room" and its striking similarity to "Stormy", I discovered both shared virtually the same melody, chord progression, rhythm and key, which made the mashup all the more easier to produce with very little in pitch or tempo adjustments. The only significant modification was the addition of a harmonic string track to more or less "congeal" the two together. I hope you enjoy this rendition.

John Legend should have covered the song, it would have been great. Instead, by simply adding new lyrics and passing it off as new he disrespected Dennis Yost, the Classics IV and disgraced himself.

@RNGomez Of all the comments I've seen, yours has to be the best. You hit the nail on the head! Couldn't have said it better myself.

For all doubters...John Legend did have permission to do this...he paid respects to Dennis Yost...comments 2 years ago will show his wife thanking John for remembering her husband

@cdwilson50 Sorry, you are sorely mistaken. Mrs. Linda Yost never mentioned John Legend nor addressed any comments to him. In fact, she had thanked me -- not John -- for having made this video. Here is the actual message she had posted to ME:
Thank you for honoring my husband with this video. Dennis was all about keeping the music alive, that's why The Classics IV will go on and on.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Dennis (Linda) Yost

Hard to believe I made this mashup a week before Dennis Yost passed away. Also hard to believe that YouTube was barely three years old and lacked High-Def at the time. Otherwise, I would've made it in HD... but this version seems to have withstood the test of time. Thanks all!

@aspire1594 It's Ray Jarrell on alto. (Incidentally, Mike Shapiro wrote the solo for "Stormy" but wasn't available the day they did the final cut.)
