Astronomy Ireland says a major fireball was spotted over Ireland at around 6pm this evening.
It says the rock from space was seen blazing in the air by people all over the country.
There are reports that the fireball has landed in a field near Crimlin in Co Cavan.
Astronomy Ireland says it is unlikely to have injured anyone as it would have slowed down when it hit the atmosphere. Valentia Coastguard said it has had reports of sightings from people living in Mullingar, Limerick, Ballybunion and Bantry.

If you have any photos or video of the fireball you can send them to yourphotos@rte.ie

  • Greetings from Ireland. I was driving out of Dublin at 6pm. The airport was is about 10km north and initially I thought I was watching an airliner explode about two or three miles in front of me about 2000 feet up. If you imagine how you would expect an airliner a couple of miles away exploding and crashing to earth would look, you have an idea what it was like. However it turns out that 200 miles away in Kerry it looked exactly the same... which gives you an idea of the scale!

  • @wolfandcub0070 I just wish someone would have had taken a recording of it or at least a picture...

  • i live in crimlin in co cavan :) but i haven't found it yet, its worth 500 euro/ dollers per gram, who ever finds it is going to be rich fukers :L

  • Did you see it in the sky then?

  • tee hee! Some are saying it's a cover-up...it's really a UFO!!! I wish!

  • I've been pondering that myself. There was heavy chem-trailing the day before this in Ireland and there was a mysterious boom associated with this i've read in a couple of places, and shaking windows... look up mysterious booms at google you'll be surprised.
