I have seen many pilots diengage the autopilot @ 1000 ft, and land the aircraft manually. I know this is just more fun than sticking to fully ILS, but my Question is do they also disengage the A/T arm and vary the thrust manually for accurate PAPI or they just let the A/T arm switche ON so that it can maintain Vref speed accordingly ? or Its their choice ? what should be correct way ?
it varies from aircraft you are flying on, from what I know on 747 400 you are obliged to disengage the A/T and control the thrust manually via throttle, however , as you can see on this video ( this is 777 ) pilot flying PF doesn't disengage the A/T. On 777's the thrust should be controlled autimaticly, via AFDS ( Auto Flight Director System) and A/T in all phases of flight, for eg fuel saving issues and other. So bassicaly it all depends on plane you are flying on.
