Solar School Dedication, Hilton Head Middle School

Palmetto Electric Cooperative and Santee Cooper partnered to form the Green Power Solar Schools program in the cooperative territory of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina and Hilton Head Middle School is the location of South Carolina's first Green Power Solar School. The Green Power Solar Schools initiative is designed to encourage interest in the environment and demonstrate the feasibility and limitations of renewable power generation. The school received a 2 kilowatt solar power system which is located in the school courtyard and provides a teaching, research and hands-on demonstration opportunity for the 6th grade students there. A focus of the project is the use of a new renewable energy curriculum which meets the South Carolina state science standards to make this a unique dynamic learning opportunity.
