Yes indeed, the household of the prophet knew better than them. Imam Ali May Allah peace be upon him the successor, and the good companions . Jesus was betrayed by his companion!

[Shakir 83:29] Surely they who are guilty used to laugh at those who believe.[Shakir 83:31] And when they returned to their own followers they returned exulting.[Shakir 83:32] And when they saw them, they said: Most surely these are in error;[Shakir 83:33] And they were not sent to be keepers over them.[Shakir 83:34] So today those who believe shall laugh at the unbelievers; [Shakir 83:35] On thrones, they will look.

Another narration from Sahih Muslim which confirms who exactly the Ahlul Bayt (PBUT) are...

Narrated Aisha: One day the Prophet (PBUH&HF) came out afternoon wearing a black cloak (upper garment or gown; long coat), then al-Hasan Ibn Ali came and the Prophet accommodated him under the cloak, then al-Husain came and entered the cloak, then Fatimah came and the Prophet entered her under the cloak, then Ali came and the Prophet entered him to the cloak as well.

"O' Allah! These are the Members of my House (Ahlul-Bayt). Keep them away from every impurity and purify them with a perfect purification." Umm Salama (the wife of Prophet) asked: "Am I also included among them O Apostle of Allah?" the Prophet replied: "You remain in your position and you are toward a good ending."

Sunni reference: Sahih al-Tirmidhi, v5, pp 351,663
