When overseeding your lawn, the key is to have seed-to-soil contact. There are a variety of methods that can achieve this goal. Rodney St. John, turfgrass specialist with K-State Research and Extension, has some recommendations.
@SDParent That machine is sometimes called all three of those names, verticutter, power rake, dethatcher. They even make that machine with a seed hopper on the back and it would then be called a slit seeder.
If needing/wanting to ammend the soil with compost...you can do it two ways. 1. In a total renovation, you would kill the existing vegetation, add 3 inches of compost and till it to a depth of 6inches. Then seed or sod. 2. In an overseeding process, I would not topdress the lawn during the overseeding process. Overseed, get it established and then next year, core aerate and topdress (apply a light application) with about 1/4-1/2 of compost and drag it in.
Great video and info. I looked at many other videos and yours made the most sense. Bookmarked. The only thing you didn't address was how to add a topdressing for lawns with insufficient top soil conditions(low nutrient lawns) and at what step in your process it would be incorporated and how it's done. Otherwise Thank You for the informative Vid.
