we grew up to this sound in the Kongo when listening to the RSA radio news it's just a very familliar sound for most Kids of my generation. we need some proper production of this kind of music for a good relaxation. PURE TALENT.
Siabonga kwela singer.

Too, too long since I heard some proper kwela style.
Thanks

the flute here used is perhaps not a pennywhistle, but an end-blown flute, just a metal tube with holes for the fingers. The sound is produced by blowing the air stream exactly on the edge of the tube. As the edge is not specially sharpened, this beautiful coarse sound can be produced. BK

I'm loving the Kwela whistle style, Luyanda Nbete illustrates the method I've heard described of playing Kwela on the whistle - that is, holding the whistle so's the holes face sideways and practically eating thing! can anyone tell me why it's done this way? Doesn't look like it makes playing the thing any easier!
Also see how he's playing it left handed... to my eye it's like Hendrix with his guitar strung back to front! - Nuts! but what a wonderful sound
