ST. LOUIS (AP) — The St. Louis Rams decided on a backup quarterback Saturday, signing Kyle Boller to a free-agent contract.

The 27-year-old Boller spent all of last season, his sixth with the Baltimore Ravens, on injured reserve with a shoulder injury sustained in the second preseason game. He was Baltimore's first-round pick in the 2003 draft, and the 19th overall selection.

"We are happy to add Kyle to our roster," new coach Steve Spagnuolo said in a statement. "We feel that he'll be a valuable addition to our team."

The 6-3, 220-pound Boller is 10 years younger than Gus Frerotte, the player the Rams had been negotiating with to return. Frerotte was released with one year to go on a three-year contract before last season, then was 8-3 as the starter with the Vikings.

Boller started 42 games over five seasons with the Ravens and holds the franchise record with 7,846 yards with 45 touchdown passes and 44 interceptions. Inconsistent play led to the Ravens taking another quarterback, Joe Flacco, in the first round last year.

  • yup flacco is your guy. where is he from? Vermont or Maine or something like that? who would of thought of him? and look at how well he did as a rookie. you can only wonder what will become of him in the next few seasons. he's bound to be a star. Ravens fans should be very thankful to have such a keen football connoisseur like Newsome in the front office.

  • IMO Boller was in the wrong offense for his skill set. He needs to be in a pass heavy offense to get into a rhythm with his receivers and have deep options because he has a great arm. Brian Billick's west coast style passing offense didn't utilize his abilities

  • GO FLACCO!!!

  • you spelt Boller wrong

  • He'll do good for the rams

i also liked him as a person

but hated him asd our QB

  • Got some news for you all! I am predicting that Boller does better, possibly much better, for the Rams than he ever did for the Ravens. Why? Because he came into Baltimore as a franchise QB. Now, he will be hungrier to proove that he CAN be good and to start over. In addition, Brian Billick treating him above everyone else softened him up, IMHO. Assuming the St. Louis coach doesn't do that, it will toughen him up. I wish him the best.

  • I feel kinda bad for Boller...he kinda got thrown into his position...it's kinda not fair.
