After a day of touring the city and a short break at the hotel, we decided on a whim to head over to the East Gallery, one of the longest stretches of the Berlin Wall that remains standing. This stretch of the Wall that you're looking at faces to the former East Berlin and served as a kind of canvas for local artists who used it as a place to express themselves and to protest the control of the GDR. The artwork is as diverse as it is exuberant. The bright colors no doubt served as a respite at least for the eyes after a sea of grey that was the rest of East Berlin at the time. After the wall "came down" in 1989, there was a lot of damage to these large canvases by treasure hunters. The German government has undertaken an incredible restoration project whereby they are searching for the original artists to restore their work. We were lucky enough to catch one doing just that.
