After returning to the States Ken Scheckter resumed his university education. He succeeded in directing a blood donation campaign at the university where amount of the collected blood made a record high that was more than twice the amount the previous campaigns did.
J. Howard Thayer made the Navy his career. In January, 1961, while flying a night mission in an A-4 attack plane from a carrier in the Mediterranean Sea, both he and his squadron commander flew into the water while on landing approach. Their remains were never recovered. Thayer was survived by his wife and 3 small children. Almost 57 years after his heroic act with Schecter, Thayer was posthumously awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, 5 May 2009.
The incident happened from USS Valley Forge, March 22, 1952. Pilot Ken Schecter was hit by AA while flying his 27th mission over Korea. Lieutenant (jg) Howard Thayer heard the distress call, climbed and flew alongside. 30 miles behind the front lines, on the coast, was a Marine airfield designated K-50. Thayer escorted Schecter to the airfield where Schecter made a perfect landing, even though he was blind. Schecter retired due to medical disabilities on August 31, 1952.
