Large calibers like that are handy for hunting dangerous game such as bears and boars. Also, the 2nd Amendment guarantees our right to revolution in case of a tyrannical government.
So regarding your question as to why we have such powerful guns: because we can.

Why is it unfortunate that the brake isn't threaded. Is it that important to be able to take it off?

@lcawood - I wouldn't say that it is "important" but I would rather have the option to shoot with or without the brake. There are also several new muzzle brakes coming out that I would like to experiment with that are specifically designed around the 50 Beowulf.

Sheesh! What kind of buffer do you use for that monster? I'm guessing/hoping it isn't a stock one lol.

@commisar1337- I actually do use a stock buffer system. There are some other options out there, but I don't see it as being necessary.

@theusmarine2013- Have never had a reliability issue with this weapon, so I would say extremely reliable, even under nasty conditions
