@MrBearsito I agree with the other answers, but it's probably not worth the investment for MBTA since all of the other lines are not electrified and it wouldn't be worth it to invest in electric locomotives for this one line from Boston to Providence. I would then, however, like to see energy/eco-efficient locomotives soon!

Its a mirror. Its used to help the engineer see the platform of the station when he/she is coming in or out of a station thats curved, and its used so the engineer doesn't risk hitting someone/something coming in or out of a station.

Because to use the tracks its already a fee. To use the catenary wires is more money.

Why can't MBTA make electric locomotives like NJ Transit does?

@MrBearsito That's a good question. I think MBTA has Catenary wires only where Amtrak runs. I believe it got install around 1988 or so. I know Amtrak F40's used to run to Boston prior to that.
