It's hard to visualize what 3,000 miles looks like. This iPhone time lapse video, which was started soon after climbing through 10,000 feet, might give you an idea just how much distance is crossed on a transatlantic flight.

Music is "Jaracanda" a song included with iMovie '09.

Footage taken in 2009 using an iPhone (in airplane mode) with iTimeLapse. Every few hours I'd switch locations on the windscreen.

Wow, that's 43 km/sec. Over 5 times Earth orbital speed. If you were really going that fast, you'd be thrown against the roof with an accel of almost 28 Earth gravities! Not only that, but you'd be going just above solar system escape velocity if you were going this velocity at the Earth's distance from the Sun, which you are. :) But if you did the burn to this velocity at Earth, you'd be 11 km/sec too slow after escaping Earth. But hey, that's what 97 k mph looks like. Minus the plasma ball.
