This was a very interesting test. I do have both kinds of track and this is now a concern too since I want to use mostly MTH. So your post was back in May, any update for now BEFORE I go and spend some more money on MTH?
I heard that you can run trains forever on rounded rails. The flat T-rails are still questionable and I hear that over long running time, the flat edge will leave wear patterns in the wheels a lot faster if you run trains often. I don't have any evidence or proof on that as of yet.
I don't like incompatibility issues with competitive company's. I have many operating rolling stock from both Lionel and MTH. I don't have the uncoupling tracks yet, now this bums me out. I heard the same thing from other people too, but thought it was just them, their dirty track, and their faulty equipment. I have Lionel Fastrack, MTH Realtrack and Atlas O track. I like all of them and can't really decide which one to go all out with.

MTH and Lionel are big competitors. The equipment has always been designed to operate exclusively for their own products.
