LEBANON HIGH SCHOOL EXPERIENCES REAL-LIFE CRASH
St. Johns Trauma and Injury Prevention Center staged a mock car crash or docudrama at 1:45pm, Friday, April 30, 2010 at Lebanon high school, 777 Brice Street Lebanon, MO 65615.
Staff from St. Johns Trauma and Burn Center, St. Johns Life Line, Lebanon Fire Department, Lebanon Police Department, the Laclede County Coroner, St. Johns EMS, St. Johns EMT students, Holman-Howe Funeral Homes, Quick Towing and Nancys Place assisted carefully selected Lebanon high school students to stage the docudrama by creating a realistic car accident scene played out in front of the student body. Volunteers and staff apply students with realistic make-up and wounds to alter them into crash victims.
Docudramas require a community effort and a lot of time and donations from St. Johns and surrounding emergency care providers. Firefighters, paramedics, police officers and other emergency personnel respond to the scene as if it were a real situation. The local fire departments use the Jaws of Life to extract crash victims from the car. Paramedics treat victims mock injuries and police officers give sobriety tests to the mock drunk drivers and put them in handcuffs.
Inattention is the number one cause of motor vehicle crashes in Missouri. As teens view the real life consequences of a motor vehicle crash the situation allows them to understand the traumatic injuries that can result from poor decision-making. It also allows the teen to understand that the consequences of such decisions affect more than just one person. said Pam Holt, RN, BSN, St. Johns Injury Prevention Coordinator.
Following the crash scene, the students attend an assembly led by Holt giving the student body an opportunity to discuss the crash scene and the events surrounding the mock crash. Holt also presents a powerful, interactive presentation that shows actual footage from crashes. Holt explains the physics of a motor vehicle crash and describes the injuries that crash victims commonly sustain. She also discusses various driving behaviors such as inattention, drinking and driving and the daily importance of wearing a seatbelt with the students.
Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of trauma admission for 16-24 year-olds to St. Johns. Of those, 63% were not wearing a seatbelt at the time of their crash. The unbelted persons hospital stay is one day longer than someone who was wearing a seatbelt, Holt said. Hospital charges for the unbelted that are uninsured are, on average, $24,000 more than someone uninsured who was wearing their seatbelt.
