On March 18, 2010, the Philadelphia Zoo will be awarding $500,000 ($50,000 per year for ten years) to Denise Rambaldi, Executive Director of the Golden Lion Tamarin Association in Poço das Antas, Brazil.
At one point, the golden lion tamarin was on the verge of extinction, with less than 200 surviving in the wild. Now, thanks to the efforts of Denise Rambaldi to protect the golden lion tamarins' natural habitat in Brazil, there are more than 1000 living in the wild. But a stable population of at least 2000 is needed to ensure their long term survival in the wild.
With the monetary assistance as well as the staff expertise contributed by the Philadelphia Zoo, Denise Rambaldi's efforts to save golden lion tamarins will surely continue to be successful.
Visit the Zoo's official website to learn more about the Global Conservation Gala, about this inaugural Global Conservation Prize, and about the Conservation Impact Award, and the Emerging Conservation Leader Award recipients, who will also be honored at the Gala.

(Of course, there is also a family of these adorable creatures living (and breeding) in the Philadelphia Zoo, as you can see in this video, and you can see in real life if you visit the Zoo.)
