  • New Orleans piano player Charlie Hamilton NEVER recorded with Armstrong. Hamilton's an underated musician who also played some fine banjo. Cheers!

  • Now I wonder about that. He was a great piano player but I don't know what he was doing in the 30's but I'm sure he was in demand.

  • Hey there B - Is Charlie Hamilton the same Charlie Hamilton who recorded with Louis Armstong in his big band in the 30s?

  • Yes, it is Charlie Hamilton who also played on Sunday nights with Punch's band. Alonzo replaced Sammy Penn, original drummer with Thomas.

  • Charlie Hamilton is my grandfather... this is so great! I have never seen this footage, how can I get a copy?Thanks- Gia

  • I heard this band live at preservation hall in New Orleans in 1970. The pianoplayer is definitly Charlie Hamilton

  • Did you catch the first chorus of Louis Nelson's solo? He slips in "Somewhere My Love" and it fits! BTW, this is largely the same Preservation Hall Jazz Band which performed at my university when I was a freshman in 1972-73. Kid Thomas Valentine was definitely the leader at that time.

  • This was shot at Presevation Hall about 1971 and used as a sequence in the documentary about New Orleans trumpeter Ernest "Punch" Miller entitled "Oh Didn't He Ramble"

    The personell is definitely:

Kid thomas Valentine - tpt and leader

    Louis Nelson - tbone

Albert Burbank - clarinet (fabulous player)

    Emanuel Paul - tenor sax

Joseph "Kid Twat" Butler - bass

Alonzo Stewart - drums ( who rushes)

I think the piano player is either Joe James or Charlie Hamilton - I believe it to be the latter.

  • shABBY. albert burbank is awesome. amazing tone and clarity. kid thomas, great band leader. can barely hear him but who cares. love it
