My band had been asked to play a Z-103/Banana Boat radio station listeners' party off the North Carolina coast aboard the head boat, The Continental Shelf in 1992. I asked premier Bluesman and friend, Big Boy Henry, to join us for the last set in order to pay homage to the roots of our "rock and roll" and show where the power of rock and roll really came from. Although he was getting on in years and feeling "rather poorly", Big Boy obliged and was brought down to the docks to honor us with his presence for the party and performance. As was his (and my) custom when playing or recording together, I asked him before each song, "Big Boy, do you want a fast one or a slow one?" This number was one of the "slow ones".

As always, when I was playing or recording with Big Boy, both the words and the music was made up "on the spot" with myself and my band doing our best to spontaneously compose the music and sync it with whatever Big Boy felt like expressing at the moment as we followed his vocal cues. The recording was made live on the rocking (both figuratively and literally) boat off the shore of Beaufort, NC which was Big Boy's hometown. We set up a small system on the top deck of the boat and played 2 sets of blues and rock and roll to the crowd below and then brought Big Boy up for a third blues set. This selection is one of the songs from that third set. It was recorded on a single fixed consumer camcorder and I had to do a bit of processing to restore the feeling and take out the wind and extraneous noises but the feeling and intensity came through when all was said and done.

Big Boy passed on to higher things several years later when I was playing in London and although I was not able to return in time to attend his funeral, I have many video and audio recordings that he and I made, both live and in the studio, in my vault to bring his spirit back when I'm feeling blue (or happy, for that matter). He is a mighty soul and I will always cherish his musical genius that he was generous enough to share with me.

The musicians on this recording are Big Boy on vocals, myself on slide guitar, Jim Miller on guitar, Greg Noble on Drums, and Brett Herndon on Bass.

Big Boy, you are missed by many !
