Yes, sure, there were plenty of good guitarists around; plus some great ones (though probably not as many as get acclaimed). But Franny Beecher was in the genius class, and there were very, very few of them.
We saw the Comets on some of their later tours of the UK, including Brean in 1989, in London the following year; and then a bit later at Malvern, when the guitarists from the other bands on the bill all came out and knelt in front of the stage while Franny played 'Goofin Around'.

"Franny is the FIRST ever guitar hero!!!!" I love Beecher, but Johnny "Guitar" Watson's "Space Guitar" was recorded before Beecher even joined Haley, and Pee Wee Crayton's "Poppa Stoppa" was recorded four years before that. Other guitar heroes from before Beecher was with Haley, as Beecher could tell you, were Charlie Christian, Alvino Rey, Django Reinhardt, T-Bone Walker, Speedy West, Blind Blake, many others.

Is it any wonder there were riots in the UK when he showed up? Yes, I know there was a bunch of other hoodlem TeddyBoy riots happening already related to other sociopolitical stuff, but Haley and the Comets were just soooooooooo amazing...who wouldn't blow their top over them!

You are entitled to your opinion but what facts back that up my friend? My grandfather was self taught and created his own style. You have no clue and need some education on our rock and roll history
