Part 2 of 2

Placido Domingo sings the aria "The Shadow Haunts Me Wherever I Go" from the first act of Tan Dun's opera The First Emperor, which premiered in December 2006. Soprano Elizabeth Futral, bass Hao Jiang Tian, and mezzo-soprano Susanne Mentzer are also in the scene. Towards the end of the scene we also see Michelle DeYoung and Chinese Opera star Wu Hsing Kuo as the Yin-Yang Master. The performance comes from January 2007 in New York.

  • The style is different, it is true...not an opera in the traditional sense. I found it difficult to like on first impression as well, but it gets better after listening to it several times.

  • that's one heck of a set

  • Hey guys I wonder if you can help me. I am looking for a play that appeared on PBS a few years ago. It is about a soilder who has an affiar with a married woman. Also he has one the affection of he commander's older sister who is sickly. Through her obessesive love he realized what love really is. He decided to be with her but she dies later on. It was called Beloved or Lover I can't remember, I had it on tape but I lost it. Please help.

  • The music and instrumentation itself I think is nothing short of spectacular. My issue is the way the words have been set here. The emphasis is on the wrong syllables of words often. Though this could also be going to the old practice which is more baroque. Even so, that style of vocal writing's not preferable to me, but at least it sounds nice even though I can't understand a word they're saying!

  • I didn't know they filmed this! I saw his last performance of it at the Met - my first time at the Met, actually. I didn't love the opera, but Domingo was spectacular.

  • I saw the premiere of this. I didn't really like it, and sadly, I shared many of the critics' opinions. I'm trying to reconsider my opinion by relistening to it. Sometimes, first impressions can be tough.
