An adaption of Albert Camus' "The Stranger"; Marcello Mastroianni plays a French man accused of murder in pre-revolutionary Algiers who re-examines his life in a crisis of conscience.

AzeriNY, I see from your posts that you found the movie. Yes this is the one I have as well but the quality of yours is much better. Where did you find it?
If anyone has a clip from this movie I'd love to have you put it on You Tube. I think it was done in 1958. Based on Albert Camus' novel of the same name. Tried to find the video for years but no luck yet.
I am pretty sure I still have this film on VHS. I copied it from my university library when I had to write a report comparing the novel to the film. If my wife hasn't accidentaly thrown it out, I will find it and post a scene or two. Give me a few weeks.
