1 in 70 boys are diagnosed with autism, making it more common than childhood cancer, pediatric AIDS, and juvenile diabetes COMBINED! The rate of autism continues to grow by 10%-17% annually.

Our 9 year old son Peter was diagnosed with 3 autism spectrum disorders in 2006. In our experience, finding reliable data, best practices, treatment paths, and local resources for autism has been time consuming and laborious because the information is so fragmented. The Els Center of Excellence is seeking to change all that.

PGA TOUR golfer Ernie Els, whose 8 year old son Ben is also on the autism spectrum, founded the Els for Autism Foundation in 2009. This year, the Foundation launched a capital campaign to raise $30 million dollars to build the Els Center of Excellence. The Els' have already committed $6 million dollars of their own to the facility. The Center includes an Internet-based learning platform that gives children around the world who are on the spectrum access to best practices in education and therapies. It will also connect the international autism community and share the very latest information and research. This first of its kind Center will also host an on-site education campus, medical and professional resources, research facilities, and transition to adulthood services.

To raise funds for the Center, Ernie has launched the Els for Autism Golf Challenge. With 30 regional qualifying events and a grand finale in Las Vegas, the Challenge is the largest charity-driven golf tournament series in U.S. history. So far this year, the series has generated in excess of $1 million dollars for the Center!

I have volunteered as Chairman of the Tampa Bay regional qualifying event on September 18th at TPC Tampa Bay. We have a few open spots remaining if you'd like to join us.
