Karl Georg was born in the town of Schwerin in what was then East Germany. Before the fall of the Wall, he fled to West Germany and settled in Gottingen, where he met and married his wife. After the collapse of East Germany, they moved back to Georg's home town. But even 20 years after reunification, their two backgrounds are still a cause for hefty discussion.
