I would like to say that this is not Irish music, the song is traditional to Newfoundland (it appeared in the Dominion Brewers Newfoundland Song book, 1978 (or there abouts)) And also that the Pogues are more of a rock band then traditional.

They modernize them. That is how they expose them to 10 times the audience. I won't dispute that they are good musicians, but I wouldn't call them a traditional band (which you did not, I know, but the implication was there), the modernization is not something that I particularly agree with, but what odds.
Yes I know this has very little to do with what you wrote, I apologize but I think that this should be said any ways.
