Yes, that really is clay! Originally I did this animation with modeling clay. But I like this version better because the Sculpey clay gave me a smoother "yarn."

How many hours did this take

This particular version took between 3 and 4 hours. After the first version done in modeling clay, my first attempt with the Sculpey didn't work because the heat from handling the Sculpey made it melt and stick together. So I tried again the next day and by handling it less and using talcum powder, I got it to work :-)
