World War I & II - Ok, it mainly has WWI vids so I may do a vid for WWII at some point. This vid could of been done better but I am on Windows ME at a friends and not at home to work on it properly, sorry. But I did try my best with an old version of Movie Maker.
We meet 'neath the sounding rafters
And the walls around are bare
As they echo to our laughter
'Twould not seem that the dead were there
Who dreads to the dead returning
Who shrinks from that sable shore
Where the high and haughty yearning
Of the souls will be no more?
So stand to your glasses steady
'Tis all we have left to prize
Quaff a cup to the dead already
And one to the next who dies
Cut off from the land that bore us
Betrayed by the land we find
When the brightest have gone before us
And the dullest remain behind
There is not time for repentance
'Tis folly to yield to despair
When a shudder may finish a sentence
Or death put an end to a prayer
Time was when we frowned on others
We thought we were wiser then
But now let us all be brothers
For we never may meet again
[ But a truce to this mournful story
[ For death is a distant friend
[ So here's to a life of glory
[ And a laurel to crown each end
So stand to your glasses steady
'Tis all we have left to prize
Quaff a cup to the dead already )
And one to the next who dies (2x)

When I was 12 I was quite ill & was sent to stay with my grandparents to recover. My grandfather was in his 70s & had been wounded at Gallipoli. We would walk to the park and he would sit with other old men - all veterans of WW1 - the Somme, Paschendale, Palestine. All had been wounded. They were well turned out - hats, ties, jackets, shined shoes. No one spoke of the war but sometimes they called my grandfather 'Sarge'. Thinking back it brings the occasional tear. Real men - real gentlemen.

Never, never, never, never, never, never, ever forget. Some people these days seem to forget what these men went through, or just ignore it, or even ridicule it. These people need a rude awakening. Give them a taste of what these men went through and they would soon realise that these people should be honoured forever. To all those alive and dead i salute you!

I found the poem a while back and became obsessed with it. I'm basing part of a story around it and this song too. It's so sad but beautiful.

Let us take a moment this Veteran's Day to remember those who gave their all for all that we have today.

Hi, Very much enjoyed this song - and the original poem (which I googled to find). I too would love to know the origin of this recording - nice English harmony singing - don't you just love it !

I don't suppose anyone can tell me where I can find a (legal) mp3 of that song? Or failing that, who performed it?

I just stand in awe of those men and that generation. How did they do it? My father's generation did speak about the Second World war - my grandfathers generation simply remained silent.

I thought I'd turn comments back on for a few days (Nov 11 tomorrow) just in case anyone is flicking through war vids.
I turned the comments off on purpose because of spam for porn and rubbish like that, sorry.
