In the modern church, one often sees the letter to the Laodiceans interpreted as though it were intended for us today - we have become lukewarm Christians, we are told, and must get on fire for God. In truth, however, this interpretation is flawed. Not only was the letter actually intended for Laodicea, but the concept of being lukewarm also has nothing at all to do with being on fire for God. Rather, it serves as an exhortation to the church to avoid teaching both salvation through adherence to Mosaic law and salvation through God's grace - it is this manner of teaching, not listless Christianity, that God finds distasteful.
