Fortuna, Empress of the World

(Para un texto en español, vea fortuna imperatrix mundi [low Q].)

I have made this video with shots taken in Pakistan, Sri Lanka and United Arab Emirates, while on a work trip to those places (the reason I cannot reveal because it is confidential). It is a video clip with music by Carl Orff and it is intended to look like a spies-, secret agents- or transporters- movie.

I like the main character of The transporter (which has three episodes till now), who is a bald man, not like the Bonds or other good looking agents, English gentlemen, more likely to be found in a party or at church in London rather than in dangerous places, where they risk their lives.

The call of an hypothetic chief leads us into this spy movie ambience.

Action starts taking place in Pakistan, more precisely in the city of Karachi, on the south east of the country, near the boarder with India. First we see the roof of the security house (sic) with lots of those ugly black birds, which are so common in Karachi, flying around. (This city is much safer that, for example, the capitol city Islamabad and its surrounding areas, where terrorist attacks are common. Karachi is safer but that does not mean that I went around alone, but I was always escorted by a bodyguard, which is the man sitting on the left of the car.)

The agents sleep is interrupted by his chief calling for the immediate performance of a mission, which will lead us from Karachi, via Colombo (Sri Lanka) to Dubai (Emirates).

Scenes of the way through the streets of Karachi to the airports are shown (have a look at the buses).

In Colombo a short look around the airport free shop is shown and afterwards we drive through the surroundings of Colombo, through a jungle, enjoying the traffic. Some views of the airport are included, with planes on the background.

Then follows the flight to Dubai, the landing at the airport, a walk through the airport facilities and we continue with scenes from a city tour: it included a boat trip along Dubai Channel, a walk-around the jewelry and gold-shop district (the pieces of jewelry shown are 100% gold), a walk around the Atlantis hotel (on the Palm Jumeira island) and its amazing aquarium, finishing with a walk on the beach only some hundred meters away form the famous seven-stars hotel (Baruj Arab).

About the music:

Carmina Burana is a set of middle age profane poems, both heretic and erotic, which were kept in a Benedictine monastery in Bavaria, Germany. It comprises poems in Latin, French and German. The German composer Carl Orff (1895-1982) had set them to music ca. 1930.

The election of the two first poems (Fortuna Imperatrix Mundi and Fortune Plango Vulnera) has a metaphoric meaning: human life (specially in places like Pakistan and Sri Lanka) is governed by the whims of goddess Fortune (O Fortune, like the moon you are changeable, ever waxing and waning;), playing with people (hateful life! first oppresses and then soothes as fancy takes it;); what we have today may not be ours tomorrow (Fate is against me in health and virtue, driven on and weighted down, always enslaved.).

1. Fortuna, Empress of the World

1. O Fortune,
like the moon
you are changeable,
ever waxing
and waning;
hateful life
first oppresses
and then soothes
as fancy takes it;
poverty
and power
it melts them like ice.

Fate - monstrous
and empty,
you whirling wheel,
you are malevolent,
well-being is vain
and always fades to nothing,
shadowed
and veiled
you plague me too;
now through the game
I bring my bare back
to your villainy.

Fate is against me
in health
and virtue,
driven on
and weighted down,
always enslaved.
So at this hour
without delay
pluck the vibrating strings;
since Fate
strikes down the strong man,
everyone weep with me!

I bemoan the wounds of Fortune
with weeping eyes,
for the gifts she made me
she perversely takes away.
It is written in truth,
that she has a fine head of hair,
but, when it comes to seizing an opportunity
she is bald.

On Fortune's throne
I used to sit raised up,
crowned with
the many-colored flowers of prosperity;
though I may have flourished
happy and blessed,
now I fall from the peak
deprived of glory.

The wheel of Fortune turns;
I go down, demeaned;
another is raised up;
far too high up
sits the king at the summit -
let him fear ruin!
for under the axis is written
Queen Hecuba.
