In our second installment of the History of Fitness Series (sorry it took so long) we explore the roots of the sport of weightlifting, which is the most popular modern version of the age old battle of strength between man/woman and gravity.

(Quick correction: Serge Redding was not Bulgarian, but Belgian. You know that, I know that, but I get confused easily, especially with words that begin with B).

  • At 8:02, Serge Redding was described as a Bulgarian lifter, that's incorrect, he's Belgian (dec. 1975)

  • @Bergred: please either read the video description or the many comments with the same thing to say below.

  • Absolutely no mention of kettlebells whatsoever?

  • @SpeedoJoe: Kettlebells don't have much place in the origins of the sport of weightlifting. Despite all the modern hype about them, modern KB sport didn't exist until recently and has no relation to Weightlifting except that sometimes they shared gym space with the barbells and might have been used by some lifters for supplemental strength. I'd have to include ALL manner of training tools if that warrants a mention of KBs.

  • Weightlifting is not ~POWERLIFTING~ That's for sure! There's a very big difference.

  • @nodache : nope, indeed, Powerlifting has a much younger history, not really becoming what we know of today until the 60's. The name "powerlifting" is ironic though, since, if ya dust off your old mechanical formula for power (P= F x v), then Weightlifting is actually "power" lifting, while Powerlifiting tends to be more Max Force lifting... or am I just being pedantic?

  • @asianstrength He's lifting them with his teeth. Look again.

  • @Bodytribe1 I wouldn't call it pedantic at all.

  • @asianstrength no, the line is going up into his mouth
