@310BPM Okay! Wow, you covered that one pretty good! And you are so right. There is lots of jumping, clapping, arm-waving and chanting at all the concerts I see on Youtube for Japanese idols. The idol magnates must be making a ton off these people!

Wotagei or otagei (ヲタ芸 or オタ芸?) refers to a type of dancing and cheering gestures performed by wota, fans of Japanese idol singers (and thus seen as Akiba-kei), involving jumping, clapping, arm-waving and chanting slogans.

On the matter, in recent years "idol otaku" are naming themselves simply as Wota (ヲタ) as a way to differentiate from traditional otaku. The word was derived by dropping the last mora, leaving ota (オタ) and then replacing o (オ) with the identically sounding character wo (ヲ), leaving the pronunciation unchanged.

"wotagei" is apparently a set of dance moves that otakus do at idol show, like this.
i've only just heard of it recently, too.

well "otaku" is a japanese word for a nerdy teenage to middle-aged guy who is really obsessed with idols or anime/manga, collecting figures, etc. and usually stay inside. "otaku" comes from the word for "house", and it basically means they're so obsessed they could fill their house with all the stuff they collect. (or figuratively, how much they love an idol or anime/manga character.)

@310BPM Yeah! Their original target audience was teenagers, but soon the seats were filled by guys in their 20's to 40's! (They have more money to spend!)

i always thought younger girls and teenage girls would be the ones going to Morning Musume and other idol concerts..
then i found out it's mostly creepy otakus who do weird wotagei dances and stuff..?
so strange.. D:
