This song is a fantastic mental challenge. It's difficulty lies completely in its confusing structure, odd time signatures and classic Tool poly-rhythms. I probably listened to Rosetta Stoned 75 times before even sitting down at the kit. Then I broke it into micro-sections, especially the bass drum/snare pattern in the last third of the song, which is probably the coolest bass drum/snare exchange I've encountered. I find the last minute of the song tedious, so I excluded it. Maybe sometime I'll change my mind and add it on.
Due to the fact that the iPod plays songs at a slightly different speed than my computer, I cut the video into fourths to get the most accurate dubbing I could. The drumming is all one straight take.
It is critical that every drummer develop their own unique style and interpretation. Therefore, I do not memorize any song exactly. I have spent 30 years playing drums and have developed my own style, which I prefer. I keep my playing within the framework of the song and will play a part exact if that part is either iconic (like Phil Collins In The Air Tonight) or critical to the success of the song.
Thank you for watching and lots of success drumming!!
