Actually, in hunters, movement and how the horse jumps is a MAJOR part of the whole picture. Of course temperment also plays into part.

High knee action? No such thing! A horse is a horse and the judge shouldn't base the placings on how the horse moves but how obedient and respondsive he is. I have never heard of there being proper movement for a hunter.
Other then that I think you did well. You had great rhythem, and although you could have done better you looked fine to me. The most important thing is that you had fun. Everyone has a bad show once in a while.

Is really my main point. I know that we did not a have good show by any means, our performance was subpar, however, no one else in the ring did either. Especially in the flat. (At any rate, it's all in the past and we've straighten out a lot of the problems.)

He does, very much so. (Although, this video alone is not a fair assessment of me or my horse, it was just an off day but anyway...)I know what they are looking for, but the competition that day was not stiff by any means. Had there been quality horses showing that day, we would not have placed, but a few of the horses that beat us should not have.

Your horse looks like he loves to jump, which is great, but keep in mind that there's a lot more to hunter rounds than just not chipping in. Your horse was pulling on you, throwing his head, and going around a curve on the wrong lead--all of which will kill you in the hunter ring. They want a smooth, steady, consistent ride. Keep working :).

Actually, it is a common misconception that it's just the rider's fault. A horse can chip in for many reasons. If it's rider error it's probably because the rider is off balance, pulling on the horses face or in some other way blocking his ability to jump. Especially in this case. I was cuing him to take off and he just wasn't listening. He can have a lot of knee action, but that's not why we didn't do well. (Keep in mind you haven't seen who I was competing against).
I think your horse is really really cute
