The fact of the matter is, I can think of no nation that has ever shown the slightest concern for your legalistic babble!Today's euphemisms are collateral damage;friendly fire ,whatever !To the German Nation the people in question were treated fairly. If Hypothetical fairness is your pet peeve, study the Soviet 's ideas on that subject! Pardon the pun ,but this is a dead issue;you can rail about Falshirmjager crimes forever, but no one really is concerned with it but obsessive kooks.
Secondly article 2 of Hague states that if civilians ":who, on the approach of the enemy, spontaneously take up arms to resist the invading troops", they are belligerents as long as they "carry arms openly and if they respect the laws and customs of war." No uniform required here.
As for the German paras, there is nothing that gives them protection if they land without rifles. They all carried holstered pistols and combat knives so they are armed even if tangled up in a tree.
For starters the Germans landed near 30,000 soldiers during the battle including mountain troops, so it was not just 7000 paras attacking. There were waterborne landings as well though the Royal Navy stopped the first two.
Secondly as for mutilation, the problem is most of these charges are unproven. German war correspondent Franz Pieter Weixler noted several times seeing corpses being eaten by vultures and other animals. Crete is quite hot and according to Weixler bodies rotted very quickly.
@Mcplkelly These German Falshirmjager were elite soldiers ,that could quite easily have killed ten thousand of these islanders7000 had just defeated 50 thousand english and english subjects. From the accounts I read ,these armed ,non uniformed ,locals, shot ,stabbed, and desecrated, wounded and dying paras, this is in violation of the Geneva Convention.German paras had no weapons, they were in a separate container.the officer most likely saved thousands of islanders by maintaining military law!
Whether bombing was or was not a war crime does not make what the Germans did at Kondomari, Kandanos, Floria and Kakoptro and less of a war crime. Summary execution was not correct, that is your opinion. It is in direct violation of the Hague conventions of which Germany was a signatory. You saying it was correct does not make it so.
And I find it rather humorous to hear you call the killing of Paras cowardice while the killing of unarmed civilians by the Germans was correct.
@Mcplkelly The deaths of innocent civilians has everything to do with it!Your playing the Game!Saying that murdering Kretans are in some inexplicable manner more deserving of rights, than children sleeping in bed!Your prejudiced beyond belief; The only criminals at Kondo are the cowards that killed helpless men ,suspended in trees!Every para rhere had a visceral reaction in respect to their fallen comrade, tthe field commander is the judge and jury in the military!Summary execution was correct!
Bombing has nothing to do with Kondomari, you are just trying to shift the subject because your defense of the Kondomari massacre no longer works. The fact is the Germans violated accords under Hague 1907 Section I, Chapter I, Article 1-3, and numerous articles under Section III by shooting civilians at Kondomari, by shooting people and burning Kandanos, as well as the burning of Floria and Kakopetro. The possible mutilation of German paras did not justify those actions.
