Firstly, Apologies for the hideous lighting.

In this video I show you a little Boogie Woogie/Strid Piano technique.

Hope this helps,
Ben

  • Any tips on getting all those crazy left hand jumps down? I have such a hard time with that. I do notice you are going to the same spot over and over for the top side of the left hand part.

  • My main advice is to just keep practicing.

When I do stride I tend to keep my left hand locked. What I mean is that the chord shape is already formed as my hand is moving up to hit the chords. This makes it alot easier to hit the chord. Moving your hand the right distance is the only bit you have to tackle really, which can be tackled with just practicing slowly then increasing speed.

    Good luck :)

  • Nice lesson. Good to have those Jazzy chord explained. (I think the A chord you are playing is actually a A13).

    Keep em coming !

  • Hey,

    Mattcol99 is indeed correct. I'm playing A13 in its 3rd inversion. (G C# F#)

    Apologies if I said A7#9.

Nezkeys is also correct about the common cycle of fourths progression.

    Thanks for the comments.

    Ben

  • @josiah566 Thx man, sounds like good advice. I've actually been playing a lot of piano lately, I think I'll give some Joplin a shot. About time I tried to learn Maple Leaf anyway!

  • @M0rganstudios Start with traditional ragtime. Learn some Joplin pieces and slowly move yourself to Stride piano. Speaking from experience. :)

  • On your RH riff, can you say the names of the notes as you did in the LH?

  • What kind of piano are you using?

  • that's not a A7#9 it's a 13th again as you've used F# not a C

  • exactly right.

  • Could you please do the licks again SLOW!!!

    Thanks

  • Good lord the lighting is hideous!! But you got them magic fingas.

  • I am a 72 year old female stride piano player. Your explanations are totally off the wall. Watch ivory joe hunter, etc. for the proper way to play the left hand which is only playing the chords to the melody. Get it????:)
